.Cheatin. Side of Town. (see Foggy Mountain
) the rest are band originals. Rather than
being a thrash from start to finish, the mayhem is
quite sophisticated, all the songs have discernable
form and structure which makes it all the easier to
really get into the heart of this album and enjoy the
fun. The subject matter is hard drinking, wild women
heartache, fast cars and bad times.
Kicking off with .Nervous Wreck. you are quickly
attuned to the format for proceedings, right in your
face - full speed ahead. The punk element is really up
front though it.s more attitude than furious onslaught
of bass, guitar, drums and screaming vocal, Slick
Fifty Seven are a little more subtle than that. .I
won.t beg. is more reserved, almost a ballad. This one
benefits from a pedal steel gloss and for me it.s the
top track, proving that intensity can be achieved in
many forms. .Swashbuckler TX. and .So Slow" are good
examples of the essence of the bands style as they
venture deeper into rockabilly territory, whilst
adding an adrenaline burst when things start to get
too pedestrian.
.The Ghost of Bonnie Parker.s. 11 tracks are built for
Saturday nights. There is something very refreshing
about the whole approach, the wild drumming, the
breakneck guitars it.s a familiar approach but the
style is quite individual. A good time, hugely
energetic and vibrant record, which manages to
incorporate country honky tonk elements into the music
without slipping into clichis. Some songs like .I
Won.t beg. and the grandiose .Stormy Night. benefit
from a more straight forward country performance, so
there.s hope for these guys for when the velocity
induced repetitive strain injury kicks in their latter
years."
